Create a fun interactive website where kids can learn they can make a difference in the world.
Strategy & Implementation
Overview
Nickelodeon came back with research stating that 2/3 of kids don’t believe they can make a difference in the world. It is our job to create an experience that can help educate and get kids to understand they can. Key topics to cover are food instability, global warming, mental health, and bullying. The experience needs to be fun, interactive, educational, COPPA compliant and accessible on all fronts. All of this needed to fall under the Our World umbrella at Nickelodeon.
This was prospective work done quickly to show a proof of concept.

The Overworld
The interactive site was designed with mobile and tablet in mind since those are the most commonly used screens by kids. The new Nickelodeon rebrand contains lots of textures and tactile shapes that draw the user in. We wanted to create a similar experience with the overworld map.
Using 3D icons, shapes and bright colors, we dreamed up a clay-like interactive screen for kids to touch on their tablet or phone with ease.
We also made sure the writing was at a much younger level so that Food Instability was a more approachable subject along with the other key topics
The Navigation and Paths
Several paths and activities would reside under each subject matter selected from the globe. I also generated some 3D characters using Midjourney.
This way kids would have a guide as they followed along through the various activities. The navigation was still being worked on since we still felt like some pieces might be missing for the whole experience.
The navigation here was what we landed on as our final. Kids would be able to collect stars along each path and see their progress. This would only be available during those sessions. To remain COPPA compliant no cookies are kept and no data collected.
Achievment
We wanted kids to have the joy of achievement as they progressed. We created trophies that resembled each category that they would be learning about. The thinking here was to have it be thematic but also akin to experiences the kids might have seen in Mariokart or Super Mario Odyssey.
The orange and white buttons were a tough nut to crack with accessibility, but we solved that by getting a drop shadow that didn’t feel harsh or intrusive.
